European Patchwork Meeting

St. Marie aux Mines, France
September 8-17, 2012

Known as the largest quilt show in Europe, the European Patchwork Meeting is an annual event held in Sainte Marie aux Mines in the eastern region of Alsace, France. The entire area is a treasure of a natural and artistic features  that include  many small and romantic villages, scenic beauty and cultural heritage.

Known historically as the birthplace of the Amish movement, St. Marie aux Mines is the perfect place for the event, in fact, the patchwork meeting is a direct result of the Amish history in the area.

Join World of Quilts Travel for the 18th annual European Patchwork meeting.  We will not only have time at this incredible show, but we will also see some special quilt related highlights that belong to France alone as we travel along our way.

Itinerary:

Saturday, September 8, 2012:  Depart the USA from your own home city or any city of your choice!  Deb's Free to Fly program allows you to  depart directly from any airport to meet our group in Paris, France. Not only will you avoid the hassles associated with meeting at a fixed departure airport to travel with a group, but you may leave when you want and use any points or mileage plan that suits you!  In the past, clients who fly independently save 100s of dollars over group arranged flights.  Deb's program allows you to save money while you relax and enjoy your overnight flight from your hometown to Paris!

Sunday, September 9, 2012:  After arrival in Paris, you may transfer to our hotel.  If you arrive early, the hotel will keep your luggage for you and you may set out to explore the area.  Not far from our hotel is Paris' most famous area for fabric shops.  We will meet together for dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Monday, September 10:  Today is a free day in Paris. Our guide will help you plan the perfect day for sightseeing and/or museum hopping.  There is so much to see and do, you will want to be certain to have your 'Quilter's Guide to Paris, which will be supplied by our tour leader. B

Tuesday, September 11:  This morning after breakfast, we will go to the area known as Jouy en Josas for a tour of the Oberkampf Museum.  Oberkampf was the 'royal manufacture' during the reign of Louis XIV;  he is best known for his 'toile de Jouy' (fabrics of Jouy) which started the monochrome scenic print explosion during the 1700s.  Here, the museum is dedicated to his life and work; there are many examples of his early cotton fabrics as well as those that inspired him that came from India earlier in the century.  We will return to Paris for a free afternoon. If you like, the coach will drop you off at Versailles where you may tour the palace and return to Paris on your own.  B.

Wednesday, September 12: After breakfast we will be transferred to the station to catch our TGV (fast speed train) from Paris to Strasbourg.  We will be met by a coach at the station; on our way to our hotel for the next four nights we will make a quick stop at a surprise location. (HINT - incredible fabrics).  Once we arrive and check into our hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to enjoy the surroundings.

Thursday, September 13: Following breakfast, our coach will meet us to take us to the center of St. Marie aux Mines where we will have the full day to enjoy the European Patchwork Meeting and the amazing quilt exhibitions.  The show and exhibitions are located throughout five small villages in the valley and the show producers have provided shuttles to transport us from one location to the next.  In the late afternoon, we will return to our hotel.

Friday, September 14:  Once again, we will have the opportunity to return to the European Patchwork Meeting and enjoy the day there at our leisure.

Saturday, September 15:   Today is a free day.   You might like to take in a tour of the Museum of Printed Textiles in Mulhouse.  The museum has an extraordinary exhibition that is a historical account of the textile industry in this area during the late 1700s into the 1900s.

Sunday, September 16:  We will enjoy breakfast before our transfer to the station to take the  TGV station back to Paris and the CDG airport area. Our hotel here for the night is convenient for those who will depart tomorrow.  We will enjoy a farewell dinner together, discussing the memories of our unique and very European week together.

Monday, September 17:  After breakfast today we will depart for home independently.
