November 10-20, 2009

Small Group Tour
$3,589 including round trip air

For many years, the Japanese have been accomplished quilt makers and international award winners.  Now, see first hand the depth of their artistry at the one-of-a-kind Yokahama Quilt Festival. Last year, Izumi Yamada, a very special quilt artist, invited Deb to bring a group to Japan.  Together, they have made unique inquiries and customized this land tour to include textile viewing opportunities at every corner. We have come up with a list of the "best of the best" places for quilter's to see while in Japan.  Deb has always liked to keep her groups small...and this one once in a lifetime experience will be no exception.  With a limit of only 25 people, you know that you will receive the best of service and have plenty of room to spread out on the coach as we explore the highways and byways of Japan.

Itinerary

Tuesday, November 10, Day 1:  Depart USA to Tokyo from San Francisco via United Airlines.  Meal services will be served onboard just after take-off and prior to arrival.

Wednesday, November 11, Day
Arrive Tokyo

Thursday, November 12, Day 3
After a stunning breakfast at our hotel, we will travel to the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, where we will see a collection of Kubota's incredible kimono, exhibited within a picturesque architectural setting. Kubota's handcrafted, large-scale landscape kimono are the work of a man whose life was devoted to making these textile works of art. His family carries on the tradition today. On our return to Tokyo, we will stop at a favorite Japanese shop to quench your fabric fever.

Friday, November 13, Day 4
After a filling breakfast we will see some of the familiar Tokyo landmarks. We will begin at the Imperial Palace, the Edo-Tokyo Museum, dedicated to the preservation of Edo-Tokyo heritage and in the Asakusa area.  We will also visit the Sensoji Temple, a popular Buddhist temple, originally built in the 7th century, and the Asakusa Shrine.  The temple is approached via a busy shopping street, giving us an up-close glimpse of this incredible world.

Saturday, November 14, Day 5
This is the day we have come for, as we will go to the International Yokohama Quilt Festival.

Sunday, November 15, Day 6
Today, we are in for a big shopping surprise - Japanese style.  Hint - this will be a place where you will find exciting Japanese treasures and is one that is not on the usual tourist trail.  This afternoon we will transfer to Nagoya.

Monday, November 16, Day 7
It's another day for seeing some Japanese textiles, today it will be Shibori.   Shibori is a form of tie-dying and during our visit we will learn how the incredibly detailed designs are transformed onto fabrics for beautiful linens, decorative and clothing items. We will see first hand how the items are made - from textile design to completion. At the end of the afternoon, we'll travel on to Kyoto.

Tuesday, November 17, Day 8
Following breakfast, we will tour the Golden Pavilion which is a beautiful and popular attraction. This afternoon we'll visit the Nishijin Textile Center, where they make woven textiles. Following lunch we will see the process of indigo dying using ancient recipes at a local manufacture of fine indigo goods.

Wednesday, November 18, Day 9:
Shopping day - the Japanese way: we are going to a special (and very local) area where we will be able to shop just as the Japanese artists and collectors do.  It will not be as touristy as other shopping areas and the full flavor of Japan will be felt here.  Shhh....the location is so special it is being kept very quiet. However, I can tell you this will not be a day that will disappoint.  You will find antique textiles, fabric printing supplies and instruments, hand-painted textiles, high-quality hand-made paper, hand-carved wooden items, things that definitely say, "Japan".

Thursday, November 19, Day 10:
Today we will transfer to Osaka where we will have some time in the city before our evening departure back to San Francisco.
